8:30 AM: we reach my office (lets be truthful, cubicle) to start out my work day. We start my outlook, read new e-mails, and respond to the majority of them (some will need some extra attention later on within the day.) I’m very close to finishing my one walk for the day.
8:45-9:00 AM: I open three windows: 1) the internet, 2) our very own USC database that is internal and 3) my grade point average (GPA) calculator. We make an online search to see the Common Application, our database to help keep records of everything, and just because it sounds, the GPA calculator to calculate GPAs. I am always very happy when I see a complete history that is academic. USC asks applicants to record their classes and grades by topic (English, math, language, social sciences etc…) therefore that it’s easy to see the classes a student took in ninth through eleventh grade. I’m also able to see the grades in a clear and organized way. We begin reading applications.
9:01 AM: Someone just started speaking about fantasy football. As a very first time player, this immediately catches my attention (I happened to be eliminated in the first round of playoffs after spending the entire period as number one in my own league of sixteen players…just sayin…) I find it difficult to stay focused but my stength continues to be strong this early in the morning.
9:02 AM 12:00 PM: I continue reading… the thing that is first look at in a pupil’s application is their first and second choice major (primarily because it is the first thing I see when we open an application.) I then have a look at academics, including standardized test scores and the academic history. Next we’ll consider every one of the qualitative aspects: short answer questions, essays, and activity section (helpful hint: always spell out acronyms wherever you utilize them. We don’t know most of the scheduled programs available in your school or community.) We’ll wrap the application up with letter of recommendation. Some students will even have information that is additional interview reports, which I’ll constantly read last. While I’m reading everything, I’ll take notes as I go. A few of us will read the application that is whole then take notes, but personally, I like to write when I go. We find I’m more thorough that real means even though it might take a bit longer general. Generally, my notes will describe each portion i have read drawing a conclusion that will assist me understand the pupil once I return to the application later on.

Sometime within the afternoon: we’ll answer the phone, react to emails as they come in (I try to respond to you the moment I can,) and take a few water breaks.
4:00/30 I’ll try to wrap up reading applications for the day and spend the final hour doing whatever else requires tending to (like writing this web site.) Often I’ll have a meeting in the morning or afternoon therefore this portion of my day can differ in timing. But on a day that is typical I spend this time around at the end.

Counselor on Contact
It’s Wednesday morning and i am arriving to work. Instead of going to my office, I head towards the Admission Center because I am ‘on contact.’ Just What does that mean exactly? Well, about once a thirty days, it’s my responsibility to sit in the admission center, give the admission presentations, and respond to any questions from students who visit. (It also means I have a justification to have Coffee Bean because it’s in the same building.)
8:00 a.m. After getting my café vanilla, I actually do an email that is quick and check my teeth prior to going into the presentation space. Since is Wednesday, I will give the 8:30 am and 12:30 pm Meet USC presentations today. They’re usually really involved students and often tell us about their internships and projects, therefore it’s helpful to hear their perspective. 10:00 a.m. Between presentations, I will be typically jumping between talking to prospective students and parents and doing whatever work is required of me that day. That means reviewing applications and answering emails during this particular time of the year.
